A 22-year-old man in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district was beaten with shoes in a village panchayat after he was caught sharing obscene photos of an 18-year-old woman with her prospective grooms. However, no police action was taken against him as the panchayat decided that beating him would be enough punishment.
The man and the woman were related to each other. According to Nawabganj block chief Pragya Gangwar, the man had edited the woman’s photos and sent them to her suitors.
The woman’s father said that whenever he talks about his daughter’s marriage, the man sends obscene photos to prospective grooms so that the proposals get rejected.
When the woman got to know about the man’s acts, her family called a for a panchayat to resolve the matter.
The panchayat wanted to resolve the matter, but the woman’s mother insisted on punishing him first, Gangwar said.
“The panchayat concluded that after the mother beat the accused with shoes, he would be forgiven, and it was agreed that no police action would be taken,” news agency PTI quoted Gangwar as saying.
The panchayat wanted no police action against the man, believing it would ruin his future.
“In the panchayat itself, the victim had put a condition that she will not forgive the man until she hits him with her slippers. Her mother hit him with her slippers after the panchayat and the man agreed,” PTI quoted village head Afsana as saying.
“The man has been forgiven by his relatives and it was decided that no action will be taken by the police,” she said.
Stating that they haven’t received an official report, Bareilly’s Superintendent of Police, Mukesh Chandra Mishra said, “Currently, we have no information about such an incident, but we will investigate the matter and take necessary action.”
